· Our research is under way during the first quarter of 2010 to find existing fire recruit training programs geared toward fire prevention/risk management. The research will help us develop a core curriculum on fire prevention/risk management which will be available for all fire recruit training programs, courses, etc. It is a segment of the Vision 20-20 Strategy goal of reintroducing fire prevention discipline within the fire service.
·
· In conjunction with NFFF and the Washington Association of State Fire Marshals a beta test is being conducted on fire station based fire prevention programs in three selected cities. Additional cities are being indcluded under the 2009 grant funding. The current cities include:
-
Dallas, TX
-
Portland, OR
-
Tucson, AZ
-
Vancouver, WA
-
Wilmington, NC
Strategy 4 Promote Technology to Enhance Fire and Life Safety
Lead Organization: NIST BFRL, Dan Madrzykowski
-
A symposium was held in Washington, DC in February 2010
-
Goal is to try and develop kitchen fire safety strategies. State Farm says this is one area where they still have a lot of damage and property claims.
-
Followup symposium going to be held in July at Firehouse Expo.
Strategy 5 Refine and Improve the Application of Codes and Standards that Enhance Public and Fire Fighter Safety and Preserve Community Assets
Lead Individual: Sean DeCrane
· The residential sprinkler issue in Baltimore is a good example of what Strategy 5 is all about in terms of bringing people together.
· What do we need to focus on now…is it national codes or the local and state code efforts?
· A meeting was held in Phoenix on 2/5/08 to discuss what should be the national priorities for collaborative efforts. Results will be forthcoming.
Model Performance Measures
Lead Individuals: Jim Crawford, Peg Carson, Paul Schwartzman, Martin King, Dr. Matthew Jones
· Did a webinar with 191 participants. The results were very positive.
· Looking for more opportunities to do outreach efforts.
· Doing on presentation in conjunction with PARADE.
· Will look into using ICC’s web-based training platform for an online training program
· PrepNet, run by the National Fire Academy, might be another avenue as well
· Model programs
o Will look for model programs to include
o Should work with the USFA Data Center that is compiling information on programs for inclusion in their resource library
o Need to develop criteria for model programs and a dispute resolution procedure
o We want to hear from people that are implementing the programs, how they are being implemented and how effective they are
o Need to develop a timeline for making this happen
· A symposium will be held in June 2010 to provide training and launch the program
o Funding is available for one representative per state to attend
o Will be open to others to attend if they self-fund their participation
